چکیده

In order to deal with over-constrained Constraint Satisfaction Problems, various extensions of the CSP framework have been considered by taking into account costs, uncertainties, preferences, priorities...Each extension uses a specific mathematical operator (+;max : : :) to aggregate constraint violations. In this paper, we consider a simple algebraic framework, related to Partial Constraint Satisfaction, which subsumes most of these proposals and use it to characterize existing proposals in terms of rationalityand computational complexity. We exhibit simple relationships between these proposals, try to extend some traditional CSP algorithms and prove that some of these extensions may be computationally expensive.

Valued Constraint Satisfaction Problems Applied to Functional Harmony

Harmonization with four voices is a musical problem which is subject to hard constraints, which absolutely need to be fulfilled, as well as to soft constraints, which preferably hold, but are not mandatory. In this paper, we model this problem as a valued constraint satisfaction problem (VCSP): costs are assigned to possible solutions based on the constraints they violate. We design an algorith...

Sparse Constraint Graphs and Exceptionally Hard Problems

Many types of problem exhibit a phase transition as a problem parameter is varied, from a region where most problems are easy and soluble to a region where most problems are easy but insoluble. In the intervening phase transition region, the median problem di culty is greatest. However, occasional exceptionally hard problems (ehps) can be found in the easy and soluble region: these problems can...

Modelling Soft Constraints: A Survey

Constraint programming is an approach for solving (mostly combinatorial) problems by stating constraints over the problem variables. In some problems, there is no solution satisfying all the constraints or the problem formulation must deal with uncertainty, vagueness, or imprecision. In such a case the standard constraint satisfaction techniques dealing with hard constraints cannot be used dire...

VNS/LDS+CP : A Hybrid Method for Constraint Optimization in Anytime Contexts

In many decision problems (planning, scheduling, resource allocation), the objective is to find a good solution which satisfies a set of hard (or imperative) constraints, and satisfies as well as possible a set of soft constraints expressing costs, utilities, preferences. Such problems can be referred to as Constraint Optimization Problems, and are often translated to Valued Constraint Satisfac...
